So many people talk about how mindfulness changes their lives. Are you one of them? Or do you still wish you could just sit and breathe? Maybe you’ve downloaded Insight Timer and have a streak going, but your life doesn’t feel any different. Or perhaps you are doing deep breathing exercises and don’t feel any calmer than before.

Keep reading and I’m going to let you in on something that changed the way I think about mindfulness.

TL/DR: Mindfulness as a Way of Life

It wasn’t until I realized that mindfulness isn’t a one-and-done thing that I began to feel less stressed about it. I realized that mindfulness is really just an attitude that I carry with me throughout the day. Now, I think of it as deep breathing and sitting still, which is where I practice, and all the things that happen to me during the day are where I apply what I learn.

Continuing a mindfulness practice once you start seeing results is a lot more motivating. This guide to enjoying your daily life by focusing on your sensory experiences is a great place to start:

While You’re Driving . . . Reconnect with the thrill of being on the road. Sense the steering wheel's grip and the car's responsiveness. Feel the shift as you accelerate and notice the world blurring, creating a dynamic connection between you and your surroundings.

While You’re Eating . . . Turn each meal into a sensory adventure. Savor the textures and flavors—feel the crispness or spiciness as you bite something. Immerse yourself fully in what you experience as you chew. While eating, don’t watch television, look at your phone, or do anything distracting you from the sensations.

While You’re in Meetings . . . Practice the art of deep listening. Drop your urge to respond (or check your phone if you’re bored), and focus entirely on the speaker’s words. Allow their thoughts to wash over you, enhancing the quality of connection and understanding.

While You’re Walking . . . Slow your pace and tune into the experience of movement. Feel the ground beneath you and the gentle sway of your arms and legs. Each step becomes a meditation, grounding you in the present.

While You’re Listening to Music . . . Create a sonic meditation: Choose a song and give it your undivided attention. Let the rhythms and melodies envelop you, allowing the music to evoke emotions and sensations. Pay attention to how sound resonates within you and offers relaxation and inspiration.

While You’re Doing Chores . . . Even mundane tasks can be transformative moments. Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates say they wash dishes nightly to get mindful and creative. Delight in the suds, embrace the repetitive movements and revel in the resulting cleanliness.

The Key: During these activities, focus on your five senses rather than thinking about or narrating a story about what you are doing.

Finally, a mindfulness approach that's kind to you - even when life gets messy.

Sol TV Creator Neil Seligman, says conscious actions align with your true self, values, and life vision. Mindfulness is key because, without inner reflection, you can't connect with your deepest desires.

Mindfulness, as my colleagues and I study it, does not depend on meditation: It is the very simple process of noticing new things, which puts us in the present.
