If you feel it’s impossible to constructively get through an anxious period, the good news is there are simple things you can do to try to manage it. Sol Bites: 4 Ways to Beat Anxiety

1) Write it out.

Worrying is like the ultimate anxiety machine—the more you do it, the more anxious you get. It can happen so quickly that the thoughts running through your mind can spiral into a huge mess of anxiety in no time.

Next time you start to worry, grab a pen and get those thoughts out on paper. Why? Because you can't write out your worries as fast as you can think of them. You can seriously reduce your stress by slowing down and putting your anxious thoughts on paper.

2) Don’t seek external validation.

When you're anxious, it's normal to want someone to tell you everything will be okay. But the truth is, 1) life is full of uncertainties. Suppose you constantly turn to others for comfort every time you feel anxious. In that case, you're telling your brain that uncertainties are painful and should be dodged at all costs, and 2) you can’t handle uncertainties alone.

Instead of viewing uncertainties as a threat, try to embrace them as a normal part of life—even if it's uncomfortable.

3) Practice assertiveness

Chronic anxiety often comes from not standing up for yourself enough, and being assertive means asking for what you want and saying no to what you don’t want, all while being true to yourself and respectful of others. It’s all about having the confidence to be authentic to your values.

If you’re constantly putting other people’s needs before your own and not speaking up for yourself, it's no wonder you may be struggling with how to beat anxiety. You're stuck in a cycle of being unable to do what you truly want. The key to breaking free from this anxiety? Start practicing being more assertive.

4) Move. Make. Meet.

When you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, sometimes the best way to beat anxiety is by taking action. Trying to think your way out of anxiety creates more stress. Next time you feel anxious, focus on doing something so you don’t get stuck in your head.

Remember the 3Ms: Move your body, make or fix something, or meet up with a friend. The trick is about taking control and getting out of that anxious mindset. Hopefully, you’ll not only feel better, but also figure out ways to ease your anxiety in the future—or for good.
