Emotional Pain Keeping You Up at Night? 5 Ways to Find Relief
TikTok is onto something with its "emotional release" trend. Here's a guide on how to release blocked emotions.
@We often think of pain as something visible, something that leaves a mark. But many people’s most profound pain lives beneath the surface, invisible to the human eye. Emotional pain, trauma, and inner struggles may not show on our skin, but they shape how we experience the world, connect with others, and, ultimately, live our lives.
Pain under the surface is not just some abstract idea. Trauma experts like Dr. Bessel van der Kolk believe our bodies hold onto experiences. Every experience and emotion leaves an imprint—it's embedded in our cells and woven into our fascia (the connective tissue network that runs throughout the body). Our bodies never forget; they often try to protect us by holding onto these memories. Stored memories act as a warning system, helping us avoid similar situations in the future. Even if the original threat is gone, our bodies remain vigilant, prepared to defend against a repeat experience.
No wonder we often feel physical discomfort when our emotions are suppressed. When "emotional release" explodes on TikTok and Instagram, we share in a collective experience. It's a primal urge, and there’s a collective yearning to find ways to let go of the pain so many of us carry within.
Some people, however, believe that true emotional healing means never feeling negative emotions again. This is an unrealistic expectation.
Emotional healing involves allowing emotions to flow through you like waves, without resistance or fear. It's about validating the pain, listening to what your body and mind are telling you, and recognizing that pain is a natural part of life, and that it's okay not to be okay.
You don't need to rush to find a quick fix or suppress your emotions. Allow yourself to feel without judgment or pressure. Recognize that the problem isn't the pain but how we look at it. We pressure ourselves to "get over it," and by telling ourselves this, we cannot heal.
When hurt, acknowledge, accept, and—most importantly—be kind to yourself. True healing comes from listening to your inner screams, caring for your needs, and allowing yourself the time and space to recover.
Beyond Talk Therapy: Why your body holds the key
Traditional therapy often focuses on the mind, but somatic therapy recognizes the inseparable connection between mind and body. When you experience trauma or chronic stress, your nervous system can get stuck in a state of "fight or flight." It can lead to:
Hypervigilance (feeling constantly on edge)
Unexplained tension (holding stress in your muscles and organs)
Chronic pain (experiencing physical discomfort without a clear cause)
Difficulty regulating emotions (getting overwhelmed by feelings)
Disconnection from your body (feeling numb or detached from physical sensations)
Somatic Techniques to Rewire Your Nervous System
Here are some powerful somatic techniques to help you release emotional pain and regulate your nervous system:
1. Somatic Experiencing: Listen to Your Body's Whispers
Somatic experiencing helps you gently process trapped trauma by paying close attention to your body's sensations.
Gradual Exposure: Start by briefly recalling a challenging memory and—without judgment—notice the sensations that arise. Allow your body to naturally release tension through trembling, shaking, or other spontaneous movements. Gradually increase the time you spend with the memory as your tolerance grows.
2. Vagus Nerve Tapping: Soothe Your Emotional Superhighway
Vagus nerve stimulation is critical in regulating your emotions and stress response. Activate it with these gentle movements:
Lightly tap the back of your ears.
Make soft circles with your fingers around your collarbone.
Gently tap the sides of your neck.
Practice slow, deep belly breathing.
3. Trauma-Informed Movement: Release Through Motion
Movement is a powerful way to process emotions and release tension held in the body.
Hip-Opening for Trauma Release: Hip openers like wide-legged forward folds, butterfly pose, and child's pose can help release trauma stored in the pelvis. As you move, repeat a mantra like, "I release what no longer serves me," or "I am safe to let go."
Movement with Affirmations: Combine gentle, flowing movements, such as leg swings, gentle kicks, spinal waves and arm circles with affirmations like "I am healing" or "I am safe in my body." This can synchronize your mind and body and create a decisive shift in your emotional state. You can also watch intensati classes and practice from home.
4. Fascia Unwinding: Unlock Your Body's Memory
As I already mentioned, fascia can hold onto emotional tension. Try these techniques to release it:
Foam rolling: Slowly roll a foam roller over tight areas, paying attention to your breath. Notice whether you tend to hold your breath or breathe shallowly when you encounter tension. Consciously breathing into those areas can help release both physical and emotional holding.
Yin yoga: Hold gentle poses for several minutes, allowing your body to soften and release.
Myofascial release: Apply gentle pressure to tight spots using your hands or a massage ball.
5. Tapping into Healing: EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
EFT combines acupressure, affirmations, and focused awareness to shift emotional patterns. Here’s how you do it:
Identify a specific emotional pain point.
Rate its intensity on a scale of 1 to 10.
Create a compassionate statement about the pain.
Tap on specific meridian points, such as the top of the head, eyebrow, and side of the eye, while repeating the statement. These points are believed to be along energy pathways in the body called meridians. Tapping on them while focusing on the emotional issue is thought to help release blocked energy and promote healing.
Reassess the intensity of the emotion.
Your Body is Your Guide
Healing is not about erasing your pain but developing a compassionate relationship with your experiences. Your body holds incredible wisdom. Listen to its whispers, trust its innate healing capacity, and embark on a journey of profound self-discovery.
