There’s a belief out there that being able to focus requires willpower—after all, it can take a lot of effort to concentrate on one thing when your mind wants to wander. But did you know that concentration is only a tiny part of focus? And it’s actually the least important part!

The main reason why so many people can't focus is that they have no idea what focusing means.

The truth is that people who can concentrate intensely and for long periods have developed good habits.

TL/DR: Concentration as a Habit

To be successful and do great work, you need to know how to focus, and being good at concentrating means mastering a set of habits.

Sol Bites: 5 Habits to Master Concentration

1) Create a Routine Ritual

Highly focused people use routine to start a demanding activity.

Just as athletes must warm themselves up before training, focused people use a warm-up routine to condition their minds toward concentration. For example, get potential distractions out of the way before you begin your work. If you're at your desk, make sure it's neat, put lotion on your hands, and have a drink nearby before you sit down. Instead of jumping into concentration mode, try building a simple routine ritual that naturally leads you into work.

2) Embrace Procrastination

Successful people don't fight procrastination—they use it to their advantage. Procrastination is not a problem if you do things in those sidetrack moments that help your long-term objectives. That could mean doing things like cleaning up or reading something with meaningful value.

Instead of resisting the urge to procrastinate, steer it in a positive direction so that it’s easier to return to work with greater concentration.

3) Ruthlessly Eliminate Distractions

Highly focused people know that concentration is less about exerting more effort and more about ruthlessly removing meaningless distractions.

Distractions—notifications, interruptions, or entertainment—that don’t add value or help you reach your goals are the biggest obstacles to concentration. Most people try to overcome distractions using willpower, but the superior strategy is eliminating anything that will pull your attention from the get-go. Take proactive steps to create a distraction-free environment, like placing your phone in another room or deleting time-sucking apps. To concentrate more, don't fight distractions—avoid them altogether.

4) Forgive Yourself

Being hard on yourself can seem motivational, but it can shatter your confidence and focus in the long run. Toughness won’t lead to success, and a fear strategy will fail quickly and create stress, anxiety, and self-doubt.

Extremely focused individuals know that putting yourself down only makes it harder to stay focused. Be kind to yourself instead of beating yourself up over getting distracted or making mistakes. Gently refocus when you catch yourself going off track, and recognize that procrastination is common.

5) Capitalize on Inspiration

Highly focused people don’t rely on inspiration to work but trust their habits and discipline. While inspiration can strengthen focus, it’s not a prerequisite for productivity. When inspiration does strike, make the most of it.

Action generates motivation—keep reminding yourself of that. Instead of waiting for inspiration, commit yourself to a habit of consistent effort, knowing that progress will fuel your creativity and focus over time.

Think of focus as emotional weightlifting: Build mental muscle to handle anything the market (or the Internet) throws at you.
