How to Align Your Actions with Your Values

From your social media feed to your top priorities, values make all the difference.

Choosing a set of core values that will guide your life is your first step to living with intention and purpose. You'll use them to influence your life choices in a way that makes you feel good beyond decision-making and goal-setting.

Here's how to get started:

1) Make Your Feed Align With Your Values

There is a lot of scientific data that shows that our emotions are influenced by what we watch on our phones, tablets, and televisions. The sad reality is that we're bombarded with information every minute of the day. It's overwhelming, and it can lead to feelings of anxiety, rage, and decision paralysis.

The key to overcoming this is to use your values as your personal social media and streaming algorithm. Consciously pick and build themes that will help limit the amount of toxic content you see that will mess up your mood and emotions. This approach lets you filter through the constant noise and helps you make choices that serve you long-term.

2) Let Your Values Dictate What You Prioritize

When we make everything seem essential and urgent, we often miss what is truly meaningful. Our values are what we deem the non-negotiables in our lives, and they are a big deal because values are, indeed, valuable. The most effective way to prioritize something is by listening to your core values. From there, you can assign an action to every task: decide, do, delete, or delegate. Mapped out, it looks like this:

Next, differentiate between your priorities and intentional trade-offs. To be clear, we're not talking "choose the Red Bull over the green juice." We're talking about having to choose between two seemingly impossible choices.

For example, let's say your life value is fulfillment. There are probably a bunch of things that you prioritize, such as:

  • High productivity and career success

  • Emotional well-being

  • Deep connections with family and friends

  • Pursuit of your hobbies

Everything on the list above is a good thing and aligns with the core value of fulfillment, but you can’t have it all—time and energy are finite. As a result, you’re forced to make trade-offs, and to do that, you’ll have to make your priorities clear by using “even over” statements. This might mean making choices like:

  • I prioritize my emotional well-being, even over maximizing my work output.

  • I invest time in deepening my relationships with loved ones, even over my hobbies.

These statements highlight intentional trade-offs that align with your values better.

Are Your Values Still Serving You?

As we journey through life, our values naturally evolve. Feeling out of sync in your career, relationships, or personal life often indicates a shift in your values—but your habits might not have caught up yet. A job that was once attractive for its financial security or industry connections could leave you feeling empty because you now prioritize self-expression and creativity.

To explore these changes, reflect on these questions: In what ways have I grown and transformed recently? What aspects of my life fuel my passion? What holds the most profound meaning for me in this present moment?
