Self-Care 2.0: 5 Radical Rituals for a New You

Is your self-care routine just wine and Netflix? You deserve an upgrade! (And some actual self-improvement.)

Let's face it: The self-care world is saturated with clichés and superficial trends. It's time to reclaim self-care as a personalized journey of deep inner connection rather than a performative act for social media.

True self-care often involves facing uncomfortable truths, setting boundaries, and prioritizing our emotional well-being above fleeting pleasures. Despite what people make it seem, it doesn’t have to look aesthetically pleasing or be “Instagrammable.”

Maybe this seems strange because you’ve been trained to think self-care is about pampering and treating yourself to a Me Day, but self-care is not the same as self-soothing. Sometimes, things that improve long-term well-being—such as beginning inner-work, doing things you’ve been putting off, or taking care of yourself even when you feel bad—like forcing yourself to go for a walk when you're anxious, or making a healthy meal instead of ordering takeout—can feel uncomfortable and frustrating in the short term.

The "Villain Era" of Self-Care: Reclaiming Your Power

The "villain era" of self-care is a rebellion against the overly polished, picture-perfect image of self-care that dominates social media. It's about prioritizing your needs unapologetically, even if it means disrupting the status quo or challenging societal expectations. It's about embracing your inner "villain"—the part of you willing to say "No," set boundaries, and prioritize your well-being above all else.

This isn't about being selfish or mean. It's about recognizing that your well-being is not a luxury; it's a necessity.

Lead by Example

Children are always watching adults, absorbing our behaviors and internalizing our values. Imagine if you saw a child treating themself the way you treat yourself. How would it make you feel?

When we prioritize our well-being, we teach kids to do the same. When we make time for rest, nourishing food, and movement, we show them that physical health matters. When we set boundaries and prioritize our emotional needs, we empower them to do the same.

It's not about achieving perfection; it's about progress.

Here are five original self-care frameworks that you can implement today:

1) Embrace Bioenergetic Exercises

Unexpressed emotions, such as anger, anxiety, and past traumas, are like knots in your energy flow. They can limit your movement, vitality, and ability to express yourself fully. Bioenergetic exercises help untangle the knots, allowing your energy to flow freely and your authentic self to emerge.

Example: One powerful bioenergetic exercise is the "Grounding and Shaking" technique. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Begin shaking your body gently, gradually increasing the intensity. As you shake, bring awareness to any emotions or sensations you feel. Allow yourself to vocalize sounds or express yourself freely. This practice helps to discharge tension and release pent-up energy.

2) Cultivate a "Morning Altar" Practice

Start your day with intention. Create a sacred space in your home where you can dedicate a few moments each morning to connect with yourself. This could involve meditation, journaling, reading inspiring texts, or simply sitting in quiet contemplation.

3) Breathwork for Emotional Release

Go beyond basic breathing exercises and imagine your breath as a wave, carrying you through your emotions. You can also explore techniques like Holotropic Breathwork, a method that uses controlled breathing and evocative music to access altered states of consciousness for deep emotional release or Transformational Breathwork to access and release deep-seated emotions.

Transformational Breathwork utilizes a connected breathing pattern, encouraging a full inhale and a passive exhale. This rhythmic flow, bodywork, and mindful awareness can help you access and release suppressed emotions and limiting beliefs.

4) Rage Ritual

Find a healthy and safe way to express anger and frustration. It could involve martial arts, screaming into a pillow, or engaging in creative activities like painting or writing. Sol TV Creator Mathura Mahendren shares healthy ways to express rage.

5) Engage in Energy Healing Modalities

Consider exploring energy healing practices like reiki or acupuncture, which balance the body's energy flow, promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support emotional healing. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice in which a practitioner channels universal life force energy to the recipient through their hands.

Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points along the body's energy pathways. The points are believed to be energy vortexes, and stimulating them can help regulate the flow of Qi, or vital life force, throughout the body.

Engaging in any of the methods above can help you delve into your inner world, release stagnant energy and emotions, and ultimately cultivate a deeper connection with yourself. For more transformative tips, subscribe to our newsletter and stay updated.
