Over the past few years, burnout rates have been higher than ever, but the idea of having a job that sucks the life out of you is something that’s been studied for decades. In the 1970s, two psychologists, Dr. Christina Maslach and Dr. Herbert Freudenberger, independently identified the psychological hazards of working as doctors, nurses, and other caregivers.

According to Dr. Maslach, burnout has three main characteristics:

Burnout, whether it’s in your career or your personal life, can be brutal. But the good news is it doesn't have to be permanent. 🔆

💪 Taking care of yourself before you’re mentally depleted can help you stay energized and feel more in control of your life.

5 ways to prevent burnout 🔥

  1. Carve out small breaks throughout the day to move. (CrossFit or a quick walk down the street)

  2. Add five minutes of meditation or breathwork to your daily routine.

  3. Every day, write down three things you are grateful for.

  4. Connect with people in your field or with similar life circumstances who can relate to what you’re going through.

  5. Spend quality time alone or with family.

TL;DR: Understanding burnout đź’Ą

If you think some personal deficiency has led to burnout, it’s time to shift the blame. Decades of research have shown that taxing work or home environments, not individuals, are the root of the problem.

Another myth: The antidote to burnout is not more self-care, yoga, or meditation. Self-care should be a nurturing and intentional process that helps you move closer to your goals and values, not a cure-all for mental exhaustion. Self-care loses its value when we use it to avoid or overcome a challenging or toxic environment.

In this video, find out what Sol TV Founding Creator Melissa Impett, a fitness professional with a degree in holistic psychology, says about understanding burnout and how to recover from it.

3 little things that make a big difference

  1. Ending work at the same time each day. “I like the consistency and knowing it’s okay to stop work and spend time focusing on some personal goals.”

  2. Drinking one gallon of water daily. “I don’t feel as tired or suffer from headaches.”

  3. Sitting alone for 15 minutes. “I make time to zone out and don’t have to feel pressure to meditate daily.”

Burnout happens when the rewards for completing tasks don't outweigh the effort needed to succeed.
